Doug Fessenden and the Fessenden-Bowdon High School Volleyball Team
Whether you are a die hard fan of the game or not, if you follow football, you have heard of the name Doug Fessenden. He is a former NFL player who is known for his coaching skills. He has been coaching for the Dallas Cowboys for a number of years. However, in 2010, he decided to make his mark on the college level. Now, he coaches the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Doug Fess was the first baseball player in Candor to win a league title, and he coached baseball under Al Drake. His varsity team won five league titles in five years. Doug was a member of the First Congregational Church in Sidney for more than 60 years. He served as deacon for many years.

Those in the Fessenden family know a thing or two when it comes to the gridiron. The most ferocious of the group is the senior wingman, a plethora of big men, and a host of studs. The high school football has seen its fair share of talent, but the lonesome lonener has been in the mix since day one. It is no wonder the high school alumnus ranks as the school’s loneliest defender, and a worthy competitor to the foreman and his cronies on the other side of the football field. While the sexes have been a bit of a handful, the ol’ school has seen its fair share of success, a nice feat for any school.
Team sports allow boys to exercise their bodies as well as their minds
Despite the fact that many of my peers are opting out of the team sport fraternity, I have never been one to shy away from a challenge. As a matter of fact, I have participated in multiple team sport frenzies during my tenure as a child and I have even ventured into the’man’s man territory. As such, I have witnessed firsthand the benefits of participating in the sport and the pitfalls that accompany it. In fact, the benefits of the sport were so profound that I actually made a full time transition to my career path, a feat which I never thought possible.
Volleyball
Among the many activities on the Fessenden-Bowdon Public School campus, women’s volleyball is one of the more popular programs on campus. The campus has a total of nine athletic fields, two pools, a state of the art squash center and an indoor hockey rink. The Fessenden volleyball program has been ranked as one of the top 10 volleyball programs in the country for several years. Several student-athletes have made it to the next level, including senior Katelyn Stagg, who was named a North Dakota All-Star last year. The team also earned a spot in the Region 4 volleyball tournament and finished in the top 10 in the state.
